Club Spotlight: Clay Club

In addition to a rigorous curriculum, AP courses, competitive athletics, and an internship placement program that is second to none, St. Jean Baptiste High School has 30 active student organizations on campus. The Clay Club, run by art teacher Rebecca Buchanan, is particularly popular among Jeanites. Students have most recently been working on hand-building slab pottery. They have learned the techniques for rolling, scoring, cutting, folding, bending, manipulating, and joining the clay. They then bisque-fired their creations in the art studio's new kiln which was donated by parishioner, alumna, and professional photographer Suzanne Vlamis '62. The next step was creating their glazes, followed by a final firing.

Ms. Buchanan joined St. Jean's in 2021. She brings almost 20 years of experience teaching high school art -- including Advanced Placement. An artist herself, Ms. Buchanan's paintings have been exhibited in numerous juried art shows around the country including at The Painting Center in Chelsea.
