This fall, five SJB seniors spent eleven weeks volunteering and shadowing medical professionals across various departments in a highly selective medical immersion volunteer program at Lenox Hill Hospital. We are very grateful for our partnership with Lenox Hill Hospital and Northwell Health, and for the Auxiliary group whose support makes these programs possible. Through this immersive program, students gained firsthand exposure to the medical field, and their passion for healthcare was further solidified. The five seniors who participated were Adenike Alonzo-Acebo, Layla Kennedy, Vanessa Santamaria Diaz, Gabrielle Pennyfeather, and Isabella Zayas At their graduation in December, Kevin Browne, Chief Nursing Officer of Northwell Hospitals in Manhattan, reflected on the students’ growth: “Learning from nurses who you’ve just met, you’ve watched them insert themselves into the stories of people they didn’t know to bring them to a place of healing.” He added, “I hope your path brings you into a life of service…to alleviate human suffering and bring people back to a state of wholeness.” All five SJB seniors plan to pursue healthcare-related majors in college next year. Program coordinators recognized Jeanites for their professionalism, compassion, and commitment - qualities that will serve them well in their future healthcare careers.
